Today, the Laraworks team headed straight into the heart of Livingston city centre. Setting up camp just outside the busy Livingston Designer Outlet, we kicked off another one of our on-the-ground digital explorations.

As a local web design agency, we love physically visiting locations across West Lothian. It gives us a chance to uncover hidden gems, chat with business owners, and look at local digital footprints through our own creative lens to spot fresh growth opportunities.

This time, our goal is purely educational. We’re sharing our personal notes on what local businesses are doing brilliantly, alongside a few creative ideas and "what-if" concepts that we think could help maximize conversion rates.

A quick thought from our team: You don't have to completely redesign your website overnight. Small, incremental steps are often the best approach if your current site is already serving you well. Local SEO is a long-term game, make a small adjustment, monitor your rankings, give it some time, and iterate.

Location: Cairngorm House, Almondvale Boulevard
(A handy 2-minute walk from McDonald's, perfect for a lunchtime Big Mac run! 🍔)

As we walked around the city centre, we bypassed the massive corporate brands to find the local mainstays. Keegan Smith is one of the top-rated defence solicitors in the area, and their website already does some fantastic heavy lifting.

What Caught Our Eye (The Trust Builders)

  • Instant Credibility: Right on the homepage, they proudly state they are the "Criminal Law Firm of the Year." This is an instant win. If you need legal defense, you want to know you’re in highly capable hands.

  • Genuine Social Proof: They feature a dedicated reviews section. In the legal industry, getting clients to leave feedback can be incredibly tough, so showcasing these testimonials is a massive achievement.

  • Visual Authority: They display clear graphics of their industry awards, celebrating their status as winners and finalists.

  • Intuitive Navigation Signals: Contact buttons, phone numbers, and opening times are precisely laid out right where users naturally expect to see them.

  • 24/7 Helpline Support: Highlighting a round-the-clock helpline is a brilliant touch. Beyond helping stressed clients in real-time, it provides excellent local context for search engines prioritizing emergency queries.

  • Authentic Copywriting: The website content feels genuinely human rather than stuffed with robotic blurb. Modern search algorithms heavily reward this kind of authentic, helpful depth.

 

From Our Notebooks: What We’d Experiment With Next

If we were sitting down with their team to brainstorm future growth, here are the creative ideas we'd love to explore, that would increase conversion rates, and general usefulness of the website:

  • Visualizing the Journey: Facing legal issues is daunting. We'd love to see a simple, visual step-by-step roadmap (e.g., Step 1: Initial Call, Step 2: Consultation...) to help put a user's mind at ease and streamline the inquiry process.

  • Breaking Up Text-Heavy Layouts: Because legal matters require detail, the site features a lot of text. To cater to fast-paced mobile browsers, we’d experiment with breaking these up using more whitespace, icons, or expandable text accordions to keep readers engaged.

  • Expanding Dedicated Landing Pages: To cast a wider net on search engines, we'd look into creating distinct, dedicated pages for individual legal services, giving each practice area its own tailored space to shine.

  • Intent-Based Menu Design: We’d consider grouping the navigation links by what the user is trying to achieve, such as clear pathways for "New Inquiries," "Existing Clients," and "Legal Resources."

 

Spotlight 2: The Studio

Location: 2A Almondside
(Just off Almondvale Boulevard towards Howden South Road)

After popping into McDonald's for some wraps and ice cream, we headed down towards Howden South Road. Tucked away, we spotted The Studio, a beautiful local salon specializing in nails, lashes, and aesthetics. This is exactly the kind of local hidden gem we love to draw inspiration from.

What We Loved

  • Elegant Aesthetic: The website is concise but visually stunning. It features elegant branding, excellent color choices, and a genuinely chic, modern feel that matches a premium beauty experience.

  • Upfront Clarity: They provide two clear pricing pages so customers know exactly what to expect, alongside an embedded map making it incredibly easy to find their physical space.

From Our Notebooks: Our Creative Takeaways

Looking at their digital space from a fresh perspective, here are a few ideas we think could unlock even more of their hidden potential:

  • Refreshing Wasted Digital Real Estate: One of their pages is currently dedicated to past Covid-19 information. Since safety protocols have normalised, we’d love to see this valuable page space repurposed to showcase a stunning gallery of their latest work or client testimonials instead.

  • Streamlining the Booking Path: Right now, booking an appointment requires a bit of detective work to find a phone number. We'd love to see prominent, recurring "Book an Appointment" or "Get in Touch" buttons on every page to make the journey effortless for a busy client.

  • The Growth Playbook: If we were helping them scale, our instinct would be to build out specific service pages (like dedicated showcases for individual lash or nail treatments) and introduce friendly staff profiles to build a personal connection before the client even walks through the door.

 

Food for Thought for Your Own Business

  • Celebrate Your Milestone Wins: If your business wins an award or receives a glowing review, put it front and center. Authenticity and trust are the ultimate internet currencies.

  • Keep the User Journey Fresh: Every now and then, take a step back and look at your website's navigation. Swapping out outdated information for fresh service pages or simple booking buttons can completely change how customers interact with your brand.

 

Wrapping Up the Day

It was another fantastic day out in West Lothian. We wrapped up our Livingston trip by swinging past Almondvale Retail Park for a quick cuppa before heading back to the Laraworks office in Broxburn.

Bathgate, Livingston, and the surrounding areas have a brilliant ecosystem of passionate, independent businesses.
