Transforming a Slow, Outdated Store Into a High-Performance eCommerce Platform

Based in Broxburn, West Lothian, Premier Hydroponics has built a strong reputation as one of Scotland’s leading hydroponics and indoor growing suppliers. However, despite the business having a loyal customer base and extensive product range, the existing WordPress eCommerce platform had become increasingly difficult to manage.

The previous website suffered from major performance issues, inconsistent functionality, poor stock management, and an outdated shopping experience that no longer reflected the quality of the business itself. Product organisation was confusing, search functionality was limited, and stock discrepancies between the website and in-store inventory were creating operational issues and avoidable customer refunds.

The goal was not simply to redesign the site visually — it was to completely modernise the customer experience, improve operational reliability, and create a scalable platform capable of supporting long-term online growth.

Our Approach

As a business local to us in Broxburn, this project focused heavily on understanding both the customer journey and the operational side of the company.

We rebuilt the platform entirely within our in-house eCommerce system, replacing the slow and restrictive WordPress setup with a lightweight, performance-focused architecture designed specifically around Premier Hydroponics’ stock structure and workflow requirements.

A major priority was simplifying the buying experience. Previously, products existed largely as long lists with limited structure or guidance for users unfamiliar with hydroponics equipment. We redesigned the entire catalogue architecture to create a far more intuitive browsing experience based around meaningful customer journeys and growing stages.

The Solution

The rebuilt platform introduced major improvements across performance, usability, SEO, and stock management.

Key enhancements included:

  • Complete eCommerce redesign and platform rebuild
  • Integration with EPOS Now for synchronised stock management
  • Stripe payment gateway integration
  • Significant reduction in stock inconsistencies and refund issues
  • Ultra-fast product search functionality
  • Reorganisation of the entire product catalogue into meaningful categories
  • “Shop by growth stage” navigation structure
  • SEO-focused category and collection architecture
  • Mobile-first responsive experience
  • Performance-first frontend optimisation
  • Ongoing maintenance and iterative improvements through our Active Stewardship service

The stock structure overhaul became one of the most important aspects of the project. Instead of overwhelming users with hundreds of disconnected products, the site now guides customers through logical sections such as propagation, growth, bloom, harvest, nutrients, lighting, ventilation, and maintenance.

This dramatically improved usability for both experienced growers and first-time customers while also strengthening search visibility across category-specific and local search terms.

The Result

The new Premier Hydroponics platform transformed both the customer experience and day-to-day operational efficiency.

Following launch, the business saw:

  • A substantial increase in online sales performance
  • Weekly online orders grow from roughly 1 per week to between 5–10 per week
  • Stronger local SEO visibility across Broxburn, West Lothian, and Scotland-based searches
  • Faster and more reliable stock handling through EPOS integration
  • Improved customer trust through a modern and professional online experience
  • Dramatically faster site performance and product discovery
  • Reduced friction throughout the purchasing journey

While the business has historically relied more heavily on reputation and in-store trade than aggressive digital marketing, the platform now provides a scalable foundation capable of supporting significantly larger future growth.

Ongoing Partnership

Premier Hydroponics continues to evolve through our Active Stewardship service, where we provide ongoing improvements, optimisation, maintenance, and feature development as the business grows.

Rather than treating the website as a one-time project, the platform is continuously refined based on customer behaviour, operational feedback, and SEO opportunities.

This long-term approach allows the business to adapt quickly while maintaining strong technical performance and a consistently modern user experience.

Insights

One of the biggest challenges in specialist eCommerce is balancing product depth with usability.

Hydroponics retailers often carry hundreds — sometimes thousands — of technical products, but simply listing inventory online is not enough. Customers need structure, guidance, and fast access to the products relevant to their specific stage of growth or setup.

Performance also played a critical role in this project. Slow-loading eCommerce websites create friction at every stage of the buying process, especially on mobile devices where users expect instant search results and responsive navigation.

By combining technical optimisation, intelligent catalogue structure, and operational integrations, the new Premier Hydroponics platform became far more than just a redesign — it became a scalable digital infrastructure capable of supporting the business long-term.
